The ADV is pretty hammy and over the top but doesn't let down on the dramatic scenes. After a while the voices didn't bother me as much. I liked a lot of the choices and the way the VA actually felt like they were acting. The Netflix version is great, and overall done well and it's reserved and professional. I've been a long time fan, and at first I preferred the original ADV dub, but watching more and more of the Netflix version, it's very clear that the Netflix one is a faithful translation of the original Japanese version, even the tone and personality of the main character is pretty spot on. It’s not like watching one over the other is going to ruin the experience, and you can always watch both too! Just have fun either way. Overall I would suggest you watch the comparison clips and pick the dub that sounds best to you. It’s a nice song and it’s too bad the licenses could not be renewed for this dub, but understandable. This includes the couple of moments this song plays in the episodes themselves. This means the translation can be quite literal, resulting in dialogue that some have perceived as stilted compared to the flow of the original.Īnd finally, there’s the ED, “Fly Me to the Moon” which was completely removed from this version. There’s also the new script, which was heavily supervised by the Japanese studio in charge of the NGE license. Depending on the viewer this will either increase immersion or have you longing for the “fun” of the original dub. The new performances are more mellowed out, realistic, and natural sounding.

It’s more professional and consistent, but at a cost. The new Netflix dub features solid performances across the board. There’s also the translation/script, which is looser and (IMO) flows really nicely and naturally.
The show is more comedic with this dub, but the main cast is very talented and they deliver on the quiet, more dramatic moments as well. Depending on the viewer, this can either make the characters more flavored and alive, or it can pull you out of the experience by seeming too “cheesy.” There are multiple tertiary-character performances that sound quite rough, but if you have the right attitude about it you can laugh it off and have fun.
The original ADV dub features more hammy, colorful performances. I don’t think you can go that wrong with either.
